Mulching & Pine Straw in Charlotte, NC
This visit uses hardwood mulch or pine straw, the two bed covers common on Charlotte home landscapes. It edges the bed, places the material at a useful depth, and keeps it off trunks and stems.

Why the material is a choice, not a default
Pine straw is light, familiar under pines, and easy to refresh. Hardwood mulch stays put on slopes a little better and reads darker in a foundation bed. Neither one feeds the plant by magic, and neither one should be piled into a volcano around a trunk. A couple of inches, pulled back from stems, is the usual target. Deeper piles shed water and invite rot at the crown.
Old mulch that is still loose often needs a top-up, not a second full layer on top of a compacted mat. If the bed has to be raked out first, that time belongs in the quote.
Lawn mowing and the edge against the grass
Mulch should meet a cut edge, not creep into the lawn. If the grass is also tall, pair the visit with mowing.
How a bed is prepared
- The lawn edge is cut so mulch does not bleed into the grass.
- Weeds tall enough to poke through are dealt with before the new layer goes down. Heavy weeding may be garden maintenance or cleanup first.
- Material is kept off siding, stems, and the flares of trees.
- Walks are blown clear when the spreading is done.
What changes the amount
Bed area, current depth, access for bulk or bagged material, and whether the beds are scattered around the back yard all change the job. A published price per bag would ignore that. Send approximate bed sizes, or say that you want a look before a number is final. Spring is the common refresh. Some Charlotte beds get pine straw again in fall.
Garden maintenance along the lawn edge
A clean edge is what makes new mulch look finished. If the lawn is also tall, pair the visit with mowing so the edge has somewhere to land.

Questions
Questions about mulch and pine straw
Do you install both pine straw and hardwood mulch?
Yes. Say which one you want. If you are unsure, describe the beds and the look you prefer and the quote can name one.
How deep should mulch be?
About two to three inches, kept off the stems, is the working range. Existing mulch that is still in good shape may only need a thinner top-up.
Will mulch stop every weed?
It suppresses many weeds and it does not replace weeding. Seeds still land on top, and a thin layer will not hold a bed that was already full of roots.
Can you mulch around trees?
Yes, in a wide ring that does not touch the trunk. Mulch piled against bark is a common way to harm a tree, so that is not how the visit is done.
